Charles Ferson Durant is for some reason called America's first successful balloonist. He seems to have been also a naturalist.[1]
He began his ballooning career at age 25 on 9 September 1830, ascending from Castle Garden in Manhattan, in a silk balloon of his own construction.[2]
He made a big impact (not literally) in fall of 1883 with two ascents in Baltimore.[3]
Durant inspired John Wise to get involved in aeronautics.[4]
