Emmanuel Dieuaide was an engineer, patent agent, and helicopter inventor. As a French patent agent, he was recorded as being in Paris, at addresses rue de Banque, 18, and rue de Provence, 62.[1]. Dieuaide, made a powered helicopter model and well-known artworks depicting balloons.

Chanute (1894) summarizes his helicopter work thus, and cited Dieuaide's depictions of aircraft as a source of the diagrams in his own book:[2]

[In 1877,] M. Dieuaide, formerly Secretary of the French Aeronautical Society, and the well-known Engineer and Patent Attorney, whose clever chart has furnished (by permission) almost all the illustrations contained in these articles [made the model] shown in fig. 31. It consisted of two pairs of square vanes set at various angles to the line of motion, so as to vary the pitch, and rotated in contrary directions by gearing. The power was furnished by a double cylinder steam-engine connected with the boiler by a flexible hose, and the lifting power of the screws could be accurately weighed by simply putting the apparatus on a scale. [The results of the experiments seemed to show] that this double screw could not, in consequence of the losses of power due to the gearing, exert a lifting force greater than that of 26.4 lbs. per horse power."

(that is, it had counter-rotating propellers, as rephrased here: "In 1877, Emmanuel Dieuaide, a former secretary of the French Aeronautical Society, designed a helicopter with counter-rotating rotors. The engine boiler was on the ground and connected to the machine by a flexible tube." Source: Rumerman, Judy. "Early Helicopter Technology". <insert chart here> FIG. 31. -- DIEUAIDE -- 1877.

The meaning of "French Aeronautical Society" is not quite clear, there, but we should be able to find sources from the known aero societies to see which one he was an officer in.

A probably-reliable source says "Emmanuel Dieuaide's steam-powered design consisted of counter-rotating rotors driven through hoses from an above-ground boiler."

Another source indicates that it was an unmanned model, with the implication that it did actually fly.
