François Arago
François-Dominique Arago was a scientist and permanent secretary of the Académie des sciences de l'Institut de France.
In the former province of Roussillon, not far from the sea, at the foot of the Pyrénées, one finds the little known town of Estagel where was born, 26 February 1786, François-Dominique Arago. He had four brothers and two sisters; his mother was pious and distinguished; his father, after having modestly exercised the legal profession, was named treasurer of coinage, and left the country(side), to settle in Perpignan. It is there that Arago grew up, there that he finished his studies, without showing any precociousness, without anything foreshadowing the high destiny for which he was destined.
He joined the Academy in 1809, at age 23, and became secrétaire perpétuel in 1830. Early on, he worked on optics and astronomy, then electro-magnetism.[1]
