Hugh L. Willoughby
Hugh de Laussat Willoughby was an American aero inventor who patented a design for an airplane frame oriented toward improved steering.
Willoughby was born in New York, later moving to Florida and making a canoe voyage through the Everglades in 1897. He built an estate known as Mandalay at Sewall's Point, on land bought from Henry E. Sewall. He also had a home in Newport, Rhode Island, and it would seem he traveled back and forth seasonally.[1]
His patents are filed from Newport, Rhode Island. On Patent GB-1911-14240 he states that his occupation is Capitalist.
Willoughby tested aircraft in Newport and Florida. He seems to be best known for a hydroaeroplane called the Pelican.[1]
His patents, however, pertain more to an earlier aircraft called the War Hawk.[2]
It is said that Willoughby corresponded with the Wright Brothers.[2]
