"The object of this invention is to provide an efficient and compact mechanism for the transmission of motion [especially when] economy of space, lightness of construction, and reduction from a high to comparatively low speed are required. Such conditions arise in the construction of machines for aerial navigation [for example] . . . The present application is a division of my application No. 396,546 [filed Oct 7 1907], for a flying machine. This numerical reference is a serial number reference to Patent US-1907-968931.

This driving mechanism is shown as operating the wings of an orthopter." Tech classifications:

  • CPC B60S1/166 Means for transmitting drive characterised by the combination of a motor-reduction unit and a mechanism for converting rotary into oscillatory movement
  • CPC F16H21/40 Gearings comprising primarily only links or levers, with or without slides all movement being in, or parallel to, a single plane for interconverting rotary motion and oscillating motion
  • CPC Y10T74/18184 Crank, pitman, and lever
  • CPC Y10T74/19628 Pressure distributing
  • CPC Y10T74/19651 External type
  • CPC Y10T74/19856 Laterally-spaced wheels
  • Inventor location: Bratenahl, Cuyahoga county, OH (FIPSloc=39035, imputed by HistPat)
  • Witnesses as shown on the diagram pages: Brennan B. West and Nathan F. Fretter
