Patent US-1911-1203550
An airplane with floats that can take off and land on water. "The aeroplane proper is substantially the ordinary Curtiss machine which is now well known." Beneath it is a "water-borne base" with a "hydroplaning surface".
In ideal form this surface is 1' deep, 2' wide, 16' long, "flat on top and bottom and upwardly-inclined at its forward under surface to form a transversely broad landing prow and downwardly inclined at its rear upper surface to form in intersection with the bottom a transverse terminal edge extending all the way across the boat."
This patent derives from a filing on 22 August 1911 (serial number 645340), but was split and re-filed on 25 July 1916. The other part of it was refiled around the same time retaining the original serial number. (We will treat 1911 as the filing date as it corresponds to an intellectual rather than purely administrative conception of this patent's origin.)
