British chartered patent agent John Imray (1820–1902) went partnership with Charles Denton Abel, in 1856, thereby founding Abel & Imray. Charles Denton Abel is of particular note regarding other partnerships, and more generally regarding British legal, organizational, and academic developments pertinent to patent law. Regarding Patent GB-1868-1005, it is possible, and perhaps likely, John Imray filed, in the capacity of patent agent, with Matthew Piers Watt Boulton being the sole inventor, though this not made explicit in our data or in the sources of our data. This may be a case, like that of Oliver Imray, though rare elsewhere in our data, of the patent agent acting as the per se applicant.

Imray was vice-president and then president of the Institute of Patent Agents when it was created in 1882.[1]

He lived in 43 Mecklenburgh Square in London.[1]

He was an engineer in his own right, working on motors early in his life and later, in 1885, publishing a paper on on "high-speed motors" with the Institution of Civil Engineers.[1]
