To the best of our knowledge, when one American patent makes reference to an earlier filing date, and naturally by way of serial number, the resulting document, the one from which we get the data, may state that the earlier patent has been "divided", as we are fleshing out on page Divided patent applications, or it may say that is has been simply "renewed".

There are a few tangled complexes, but the fundamental distinction, and why the terms are not to be used interchangeably, is that "divided" suggests branching, the innovative emphasis of the initial patent being split, and we are very slowly catching cases of this occurring, that is, we have at least one case in which we have two patents, both using the word "divided", and both referring to the same preceding patent, by way of filing date, and serial number, on which page we are fleshing out these distinctions.
