GB is an abbreviation in this wiki referring to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The ISO chose this abbreviation rather than the more standard UK because of its preference to avoid incorporating "United", "Kingdom", and similar terms into abbreviations.[1]

Legally and in proper use Great Britain refers to England, Wales, and Scotland, or the island on which these countries are located, inclusive of Scotland's islands.[2] The generally recognized government of this territory during our period was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; since 1927 known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island. Strictly speaking, though inventors could be described as from Great Britain, the patent office represents the United Kingdom. Outside the context of the ISO code, "United Kingdom" and UK would be more correct due to the legal inclusion of Ireland. The term Great Britain (without Ireland) does not seem to appear on official UK patent literature.

The British patent offices had a registration system not an examination system in the early aero period. Britain's "Statute of Monopolies enacted in 1623 rendered illegal all monopolies except those for a defined term of years; this forms the basis of modern patent law."[3]

A comparative summary is in Bottomley, 2014.[4]
